Fire emergencies can escalate within seconds. In workplaces such as construction sites, industrial plants, offices, warehouses, and railway infrastructure projects, the correct use of a fire extinguisher can prevent injuries, equipment damage, and major operational losses.

I recently reviewed a detailed Fire Extinguisher Safety & Handling training module covering extinguisher selection, the PASS technique, extinguisher types, and fire blanket usage.

One key lesson stands out clearly:

👉 Not every extinguisher is suitable for every fire.

Using the wrong extinguisher can worsen the fire, create electrical hazards, or increase the risk of injury.

🚨 Understanding the Right Extinguisher Matters

Different fire risks require different extinguishing agents:

🔹 Water Extinguishers – For Class A fires involving paper, wood, and solid combustibles
🔹 Foam Extinguishers – For flammable liquid fires
🔹 ABC Powder Extinguishers – Suitable for Class A, B, C, and electrical fires
🔹 CO₂ Extinguishers – Commonly used for electrical fires
🔹 Wet Chemical Extinguishers – Designed for kitchen oil and fat fires

🧯 Remember the PASS Technique

✔ P – Pull the safety pin
✔ A – Aim at the base of the fire
✔ S – Squeeze the handle
✔ S – Sweep side to side

Every worker in a high-risk environment should understand this essential firefighting method.

⚠️ Know When NOT to Fight a Fire

A fire extinguisher should only be used when:
✅ The fire is small and controllable
✅ The evacuation route is clear
✅ Emergency services have been alerted
✅ The individual is trained and physically capable

If there is heavy smoke, toxic exposure, or rapid fire spread, evacuation must always take priority.

🏭 Why Fire Extinguisher Training Is Essential

In industries such as Oil & Gas, EPC, Manufacturing, Infrastructure, and Railway projects, fire risks are often linked to:
▪ Hot work activities
▪ Electrical systems
▪ Flammable liquids
▪ Combustible materials

Without proper awareness and training, even available firefighting equipment may become ineffective during emergencies.

Organizations must therefore ensure:
✔ Correct extinguisher placement
✔ Routine inspection & maintenance
✔ Practical fire drills
✔ Competency-based training
✔ Emergency preparedness awareness

A fire extinguisher mounted on a wall is only effective when workers understand:
👉 Which extinguisher to use
👉 When to use it
👉 How to use it safely

Fire safety is not just about equipment — it is about preparedness, awareness, and the ability to respond correctly under pressure.

Cathodic Corrosion Protection Systems: A Guide for Oil and Gas Industries

Cathodic Corrosion Protection Systems Cathodic Corrosion Protection Systems: A Guide for Oil and Gas Industries Preface Contents Preface The oil and gas industry depends on steel and other metals for pipelines, storage tanks, and infrastructure. However, these metals can corrode when exposed to water or soil, which is detrimental to the integrity of pipelines and storage tanks. This engineering book outlines the minimum requirements for anodes (high-silicon iron, graphite, magnetite) used in impressed current CP systems. It details the composition, materials, manufacturing, properties, inspection, and testing of these anodes. Additionally, it provides revised survey requirements to ensure corrosion control systems on buried or submerged structures are well-designed, operated, and maintained. The book also covers techniques, equipment, ...
